Originating from the Shetland Islands between Scotland and Norway, Shelties likely descended from Scottish herding dogs, which also influenced breeds like the Collie and Border Collie. Originally bred as herding and guard dogs for small livestock, Shelties quickly gained popularity among island visitors, who brought them back to mainland Britain.
