The Shiba Inu dates back to ancient Japan, where it was bred for hunting small game in the rugged mountains. It shares ancestry with other Japanese breeds like the Akita and Kishu, but the Shiba is the smallest and likely the oldest of them all. The breed nearly vanished during World War II but was revived through dedicated breeding programs after the war. Healthwise, Shibas are generally sturdy but can suffer from allergies, which are typically manageable with proper care.
