The Teddy Bear originated in the United States in the 1990s, during a period when designer breeds were becoming increasingly popular. Breeders aimed to create a small, friendly, and loyal companion dog that would thrive in households of all sizes. With its soft, fluffy coat and expressive eyes, the Teddy Bear truly lives up to its “Shichon” nickname. They typically weigh under 15 pounds, inheriting their size from the Shih Tzu parent. Teddy Bears are affectionate, intelligent, and eager to please, making them easy to train when started early. In terms of health, Teddy Bears can be prone to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and minor respiratory issues due to their shorter muzzle. Their coats, though low-shedding, require daily brushing to prevent tangles, or weekly brushing if trimmed short. Regular grooming around the eyes every few weeks keeps their vision clear. These dogs have moderate energy levels and love to play — whether it’s romping indoors or taking a relaxed walk around the neighborhood. They thrive on attention and interaction, making them ideal for families seeking a loyal, loving, and low-shedding pet.
