The Teddy Bear — also known as the Zuchon or Shichon — is a sweet, affectionate crossbreed between a Bichon Frise and a Shih Tzu. Bred to combine the Bichon’s cheerful personality with the Shih Tzu’s compact size, this cuddly companion quickly became a family favorite thanks to its loving temperament and adorable teddy bear-like appearance.
The Teddy Bear originated in the United States in the 1990s, during a period when designer breeds were becoming increasingly popular. Breeders aimed to create a small, friendly, and loyal companion dog that would thrive in households of all sizes. With its soft, fluffy coat and expressive eyes, the Teddy Bear truly lives up to its “Shichon” nickname. They typically weigh under 15 pounds, inheriting their size from the Shih Tzu parent. Their floppy ears are framed by long, silky fur that may need trimming, and their feathered tails curl gracefully over their backs. Teddy Bears are affectionate, intelligent, and eager to please, making them easy to train when started early. They get along well with children and other pets, forming strong emotional bonds with their families. Because of their social nature, they don’t enjoy being left alone for long periods. In terms of health, Teddy Bears can be prone to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and minor respiratory issues due to their shorter muzzle. Their coats, though low-shedding, require daily brushing to prevent tangles, or weekly brushing if trimmed short. Regular grooming around the eyes every few weeks keeps their vision clear. These dogs have moderate energy levels and love to play — whether it’s romping indoors or taking a relaxed walk around the neighborhood. They thrive on attention and interaction, making them ideal for families seeking a loyal, loving, and low-shedding pet.
