Originally bred in northern England during the Industrial Revolution to hunt rats in mills and factories, the breed gradually transitioned from a working dog to a beloved companion of the upper class. By the late 19th century, the Yorkshire Terrier had arrived in the United States and was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. Compact, loyal, and lively, the Yorkie quickly became a household favorite, especially among city dwellers looking for a small but spirited companion.
Yorkies are brave, playful, and alert dogs with big personalities packed into tiny bodies. They are intelligent and respond well to positive training but can be stubborn if not given clear boundaries. Devoted to their owners, they love attention and form close family bonds, making them great lap dogs and companions. Their fine, silky coats—often blue and tan or black and gold—require daily brushing to stay tangle-free, though they shed very little and are considered hypoallergenic. With regular walks, engaging playtime, and consistent grooming, the Yorkshire Terrier makes a loyal, lively, and elegant companion for any home.
