By the late 19th century, the Yorkshire Terrier had arrived in the United States and was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885. Yorkies are brave, playful, and alert dogs with big personalities packed into tiny bodies. They are intelligent and respond well to positive training but can be stubborn if not given clear boundaries. Devoted to their owners, they love attention and form close family bonds, making them great lap dogs and companions. Their fine, silky coats—often blue and tan or black and gold—require daily brushing to stay tangle-free, though they shed very little and are considered hypoallergenic.
