Also known as the Maremma, Cane da Pastore Maremmano-Abruzzese, Pastore Abruzzese, or Pastore Maremmano, the Maremma Sheepdog is an ancient Italian breed originally developed to guard livestock from wolves and other predators. With over 2,000 years of history, these majestic dogs are known for their courage, loyalty, and deep devotion to their families. Calm yet vigilant, they remain one of the most respected guardian breeds in the world.
The Maremma Sheepdog’s lineage traces back to ancient times, likely descending from mastiff-type and mountain guardian dogs depicted in Roman art. Historically, two regional varieties existed — the Maremmano from the Maremma region and the Abruzzese from the Apennine Mountains — but frequent interbreeding led to their unification into a single breed in 1958. Traditionally used to guard flocks of sheep in Italy’s rugged countryside, Maremmas were prized for their independence, intelligence, and reliability. Today, they are still valued working dogs and loyal family protectors, admired for their noble temperament and natural guarding instincts.
Maremma Sheepdogs are large, powerful, and athletic, with thick double coats that protect them from harsh weather. Their coats are usually white but can have shades of ivory, pale orange, or cream. Despite their imposing build, Maremmas carry themselves with calm confidence and gentle dignity. These dogs are affectionate and devoted to their families, often forming strong bonds with children. However, due to their guardian nature, they can be wary of strangers and require early socialization and consistent training. Naturally independent thinkers, they thrive in homes where they have a clear purpose and plenty of space to roam. Generally healthy, the breed may be prone to hip or elbow dysplasia, bloat, or eye conditions like entropion. Their dense coat requires regular brushing, especially during shedding seasons in spring and fall, to manage loose fur and maintain its health. As working dogs, Maremmas need daily exercise — long walks, hikes, or play sessions — to stay physically and mentally fulfilled. They shed heavily year-round, particularly during seasonal changes, so routine grooming is essential. With their blend of strength, loyalty, and gentle protectiveness, the Maremma Sheepdog remains a timeless symbol of devotion and guardianship.
