The English Setter is believed to have descended from a mix of the large Water Spaniel, Spanish Pointer, and Springer Spaniel. When firearms replaced nets, English Setters transitioned into pointer dogs, prized for their ability to locate and indicate game birds. The breed was brought to the United States in the 1800s and became one of the first nine breeds registered by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1878.
