Rat Terrier Puppies for sale in Shipshewana, Indiana

The Rat Terrier is an energetic and intelligent breed developed in 19th-century America to hunt rats and other small vermin on farms. Compact, athletic, and full of personality, Rat Terriers are loyal companions that thrive in both rural and urban settings. Their playful spirit and adaptability make them a great fit for families, whether in a countryside home or a city apartment.

The breed was named after its primary role—catching rats that threatened farmers’ crops. To enhance their speed, stamina, and scenting ability, early breeders crossed them with Whippets, Greyhounds, and Beagles. The result was a versatile working dog capable of hunting, guarding, and companionship. Over time, Rat Terriers transitioned from farm workers to beloved household pets. The Rat Terrier was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) and is available in two sizes: miniature and standard. Both varieties share a sleek, short coat that comes in a wide array of colors and markings. They are slightly longer than tall, with a sturdy, muscular frame and a confident stance that reflects their terrier heritage.

Rat Terriers are curious, intelligent, and affectionate companions who love to be involved in family life. Early socialization helps them get along well with children and other pets. Their sharp minds respond well to positive reinforcement, but they need plenty of physical and mental stimulation to prevent boredom. While generally healthy, Rat Terriers can be prone to joint issues such as patellar luxation or hip dysplasia. Grooming is minimal—a weekly brushing and monthly bath are usually sufficient to keep their coat glossy, though shedding tools are helpful during seasonal shedding. These dogs have moderate energy levels and enjoy daily walks, play sessions, and access to a fenced yard. They shed year-round, with heavier shedding in spring and fall, so regular grooming will help keep loose hair under control.
