Around this time, the breed spread to England and the United States, and by 1888 the Saint Bernard Club of America was formed. The Saint Bernard became one of America’s most beloved breeds during the 1960s and 70s and remains a symbol of courage and companionship to this day.
Saint Bernards are characterized by their droopy eyes, floppy ears, pronounced jowls, and large, muscular build. Their coats can be short or long, most commonly in shades of red, brown, or brindle combined with white. These calm, intelligent dogs are gentle with children and welcoming toward strangers, though they remain protective if their family is threatened. Training should start early while they’re still manageable in size. Grooming involves weekly brushing (daily during shedding seasons), and owners should clean their eyes regularly to avoid staining. While Saint Bernards don’t need strenuous exercise, they do require daily walks to stay fit and prevent joint issues. They are moderate shedders year-round, with heavier shedding in spring and fall, and—true to their alpine origins—prefer cooler weather to heat.
