History: A cross between the Chihuahua and the Poodle, the Chi-Poo is a tiny, adorable designer dog that was developed in the United States. It's almost impossible to say when the Chi-Poo originated, but breeders began intentionally mixing Chihuahuas and Poodles during the 1970s. The goal in breeding the Chi-Poo was to create a small, intelligent dog that was easy to train and low-maintenance. The breeders succeeded, and the Chi-Poo was born. When designer breeds really took off during the 80s and 90s, Chi-Poos became more in-demand. Today, the Chi-Poo remains a popular designer dog and is registered by a number of small dog clubs for hybrid and designer breeds, like the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR).

Temperament: The Chi-Poo is a smart, playful, and independent pup that thrives on being in the company of its family members. Chi-Poos love to follow their owners around the house, and they're happy to be involved in just about anything that their human is doing, from cuddling and watching TV on the couch to taking a walk in the woods. Though fairly energetic, the Chi-Poo doesn't need too much exercise. A short daily walk is usually enough activity for a Chi-Poo, but they are always up for more. Chi-Poos are adaptable dogs and do well in households both small and large. They're good with children, too, but tend to be a bit suspicious when meeting someone new. All in all, if you're looking for an independent, yet loyal family pet, you can't go wrong with a Chi-Poo.
